Fruit and Water

The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is part of the 5 A DAY programme to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.

All children at South Lanarkshire primary and special needs schools receive free fruit or juice and bottled water every school day as part of the Council's drive to promote healthy eating.

South Lanarkshire Council is committed to giving every school child the best start in life.  This includes encouraging healthy eating habits that will stay with them throughout life.

The fruit and water is typically consumed as a snack in the mornings and has begun to replace more traditional snacks such as chocolate bars, crisps and fizzy drinks.

Fresh fruit is currently provided four days a week and is usually a red or green apple, satsuma or banana.  On the fifth day the pupils receive a carton of Fair trade fresh orange.
